The annual National Bible Bowl Games, sponsored by the Black Adventist Youth Directors Association (BAYDA) took place October 26-27, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. Hosted by the South Atlantic Conference and Pastor Donovan Washington, the Youth Director for South Atlantic Conference.

Each year Northeastern Conference Youth Ministries is proud and pleased to send their very best to meet and compete with hundreds of other players from around the North American Division. NEC had teams representing from Faith SDA Church in Hartford, CT (Pre-Juniors), Cambridge SDA Church in Boston, MA (Juniors), Peekskill-Cortlandt SDA Church (Seniors), Solid Rock SDA Church in Queens, NY (Young Adults), and Goshen Temple SDA Church in Brooklyn, NY (Adults).

The games begun Friday evening with a parade of conferences, worship and prayers over each and every team and on Sabbath evening, all of the games were complete and champions were announced. NEC Pre-Juniors, Juniors and Seniors all won 1st place for their divisions. The NEC Young Adult team won 3rd place and the NEC Adults placed 4th for their divisions. Regardless of the number of points won or lost, everyone played with a championship spirit.

Dr. Young served NEC nearly 30 years as a pastor, Family Life Director & Ministerial Secretary.

Below is a touching tribute by his son, Don, also describing the circumstances surrounding his death:

As some already know, my parents drove up to my house in Grand Rapids from Atlanta to attend a family function last week. While here, my Dad became ill. He was admitted to the hospital last Friday, and then to the ICU on Sunday morning. Despite the best possible care of the wonderful staff at Blodgett Hospital, and a host of prayers and loving supporters, Dad passed away yesterday on 10/10 at 10:10 PM.

Rupert Wilhelm Young was a devoted husband to his wife, Hope (“Hopie”) for 53 years. He was a wonderful father to an amazing daughter (Karohn) and passable son (yours truly). He adored his daughter in-law (Chongo). He was “Andad” to his grandchildren Jonathon, Belita, and Wilhelm.

He was a minister for 47 years—longer when you consider that he stayed as busy in ministry after retirement as before. He was a carpenter like his Master; a builder, a designer, a pianist and organist, an artist; he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a father and grandfather; he was a confidante, a counselor, a wiseman, a shepherd, a teacher, a leader; he was a moral, virtuous man.

He had two doctorate degrees in Theology and Psychology. He had just finished his third masters. When I’d asked him why he was starting another masters degree in retirement, he said he didn’t want to be bored. Who does a masters so they’re not bored?! My dad does. Every time he came to my house he built me something. He was building some extensions for my daughter’s bed to make drawers underneath it easier to open...but didn’t have time to finish.

I love learning because he loved learning. I love books because he loved books and made his home a library. I love God because he loved God. I love my wife because he loved his wife. I love my children because he loved me.

Dad, I miss you so much already. But this will not be our final time together. On the last day the Lord will call His children from their graves to be with Him for ages unto ages. And I will be with you again. So, see you later, Dad.

Go forth, Christian soul, from the world.
In the name of God the Almighty Father who created you,
In the name of Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God who suffered for you,
In the name of the Holy Spirit who was poured out upon you,
Go forth faithful Christian.
May you live in peace this day.
May your home be with God in Zion.

Please keep the Young family in prayer during this time of bereavement.
